Cascade squeaks by in nine-inning softball war

Cascade 3, Sweet Home 2

After eight scoreless innings, Cascade came up with three runs to answer the Husky softball team’s two ninth-inning runs and win 3-2 at Cascade on March 23.

“This was an outstanding softball game,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “Both teams battled the entire game. It was a very disappointing loss, but it was a game in which we just got beat.

“As a coach, you can be disappointed when your kids don’t play well and they make mistakes. In this game, we played well. Cascade came out in the bottom of the ninth and scored three runs on three big hits.

“The winning hit was a triple that hit the chalk on the first base line.

“Everything about this game was close. Cascade simply beat us. We didn’t give them an inch.

“In the top of the ninth, (Nicki) Aerni led off with a walk. Jessalyn Seiber bunted, and Cascade committed their only errors of the game. Aerni scored on the bunt. Seiber was at third. On the second pitch to (Michelle) Cliver, we squeezed in Seiber and took a 2-0 lead.”

Defensively, “Cliver made several outstanding plays, and we played very well. Michelle loves to play defense, and it shows. She is anchoring our infield right now.

“Makenzie (Marchbanks) threw a great game, dominated throughout. She may have tired a bit in the ninth. I am not really sure. They just started hitting the ball in the bottom of the ninth. She pitched an outstanding came, and I am very proud of her.”

Marchbanks pitched 13 strikeouts, walked one batter and hit one batter.

Hitting, Marchbanks went 1-3, and Aerni went 1-4.
