Central 63, Sweet Home 19
The Huskies lost 63-19 at Central in girls basketball Friday night.
“We played pretty good in the first half,” said Coach John Barnes. The Huskies came out in the third and didn’t score as Central began a 19-0 run, and that won’t win ball games.
In the second quarter, the Huskies outscored eighth-ranked Central on the strength of a pair of threes, one from Courtnie Cuilla and one from Annie Whitfield.
That opened up the defense, Barnes said, but the Huskies also shot only 3-8 from the foul line, not getting there enough or scoring when they did.
In the third, Central pressed its attack on the inside, passing well and finding the mismatches it needed to score, Barnes said. At the same time, the Huskies did a good job blocking out for the boards, with Cuilla and Whitfield pulling down five each. Megan Graville added another six.
Central led 18-6 after one quarter. The Huskies closed the gap a little in the second, trailing 25-15 at halftime. The Huskies trailed 44-15 at the end of the third quarter.
“I was pleased with the first half,” Barnes said. “They worked hard.”
The Huskies worked hard in the third too, he said, but their shots wouldn’t fall.
