Charlie Ashby died Aug. 24, 2014.
Charlie was from Oroville, Calif. and moved to Sweet Home after he retired from the maintenance department of the Chico School District.
Charlie came into our lives four years ago when he started dating our mom, Tammy. She said the first thing she noticed about Charlie was the twinkle in his eyes, and they twinkled the brightest when he was doing what he loved.
The first time we met him, he showed up in his very pink ‘37 Chevy hot rod. We all thought, “Wow, pink,” but Charlie loved that pink hot rod and was happiest when he was tearing up town in it. He also loved going to the Dunes and riding quads, fishing, taking drives and watching NASCAR with Tammy and their dog, Cadee.
Charlie was a friend, mentor and fun-loving adopted grandpa to our boys. He opened his home and life to our family. He spent many hours warming the benches and cheering on our boys at their sporting events, Scouts and school functions. He introduced us to the fine members of the Sweet Home Kiwanis Club and taught our boys about giving back to others.
In the last few days of Charlie’s life it became very clear that he was more than just a friend to us; he was our family. We all deeply loved him and were blessed to have him in our lives while we did. He will be close to our hearts forever.
Charlie and Tammy were out in the hot rod when he suffered a brain aneurysm. He passed away a few days later.
He is survived by his children, Regena and James and others in California; Tammy Wade, his lady friend; Josh, Stephanie, Brett and Cade Blachly; Travis, Brandy (Wysong) and Brian Frick, his adopted family in Sweet Home; along with very close friends Dave and Jane Strom and many others.
Services were held in California Sept. 5.
