Cheerleaders shake rust in camp

Sweet Home’s cheer team got busy last week with its annual three-day Cheer Camp, held at Community Chapel. Coach Amber Rosa said she had 18 girls this year, half last year’s team number of 36.

“Eighteen is still pretty good,” she said. “I’m happy about that. The kids are hesitant to get involved because they’re worried they might not get the full expreince – that they’re going to get shut down.

The girls who did participate got to work on dance moves and cheers, and some limited tumbling at the camp, which ran all day Aug. 10-12.

Due to COVID restrictions, they were unable to work on stunting or spotted tumbling, both of which require close contact. They also had to wear masks whenever they were indoors, when eating breaking for lunch and when they couldn’t maintain social distancing during camp activities.

“Normally, we spend a ton of time stunting at camp,” Rosa said of her team, which is perenially one of the top in Oregon. “But we aren’t allowed to stunt at all.”
