Mowing grass, washing windows, scrubbing cars and trucks.
Perhaps they’d even throw in a couple happy tunes.
SHHS choir members have been working hard in recent weeks raising money to attend a two day music workshop in Seattle April 8-10.
The 33 students need to raise $100 each. They are closing in on the total but about $900 remained to be garnered as of last week.
Choir director Dean Friesen said his students have told him they have wanted to make such a trip for four years.
Friesen, who has previously taught at Burns, Roseburg and The Dalles, said he is excited by the SHHS group’s enthusiasm.
The workshop offers potential for all the students.
“We plan to spend two nights in Seattle. We will go to the Space Needle. We will spend time working with David Cross who teaches jazz music at the University of Washington. I want to get the kids interested in jazz,” Friesen said. “We will also spend about two hours working with the concert choir. We will spend time at a nearby church working with them.”
Friesen said his goal is to use music to teach students about life and a trip such as this will provide numerous educational opportunities in addition to basic musical improvement.
Friesen is a George Fox University graduate who was born in Africa but spent most of his growing up years in Newberg.
“If we don’t raise enough money there will be some kids who won’t be able to make the trip,” Friesen said. “They just don’t have the money to go.”
