Figuring out what color to use to replace the church carpet can be a complicated experience, especially when two close friends conspire to control it.
The problem is the two friends didn’t coordinate well enough and found “sea foam” and “Bordeaux.” The argument that ensued threw the carpet selection into chaos.
That’s what happens in a comedic play written by Dianne McIntosh for the Sweet Home Church of Christ at 18th and Long. The church will present the play this weekend. Her husband, John, wrote the music for the breaks between acts. The couple previously produced a Christmas play for the church.
The play is set in Myrtle’s café somewhere in the South where a ladies committee tries to decide what color the new carpet should be. The church is replacing canary yellow carpeting, and Maryanne Louisa and Elaina Sue have big plans to dominate the choice.
They worry that the committee, without their help, might pick “some ghastly shade of pink with an orange stripe.”
“As God’s simple servants, we must be prepared to head off God’s really simple servants,” Maryanne Louisa (McIntosh) says.
That works until they both show the colors they’ve picked out, and those colors are completely different.
The argument grows, and Mayor Hobbs (Jay Cole) is forced to observe that the committee “sounds like our council meeting.”
The play presents a message of forgiveness and peace as the argument is resolved.
The color the committee finally chooses for the new carpet is interesting, and it doesn’t stay canary yellow.
Appearing in the play are Sheryl Santesson, Dianne Macintosh, Nikki Sandberg, Jane Hoffman, Sally Pelham, Betty Postma, Bill Bradley, Jay Cole, Nancy Gosser, Kayla Marcks and Alexis Tenbusch.
The Great Suspenders, who perform music for the play, include Pastor Jeff Gallup, Tom Gosser, Julie Gosser and John McIntosh.
Crew members include Rex Livezey, Leonard Deardorff, Edith Thompson, Jane Hoffman and Lynn Wolfe.
