Churches not involved enough

Editor:

What does fellowship mean?

There is a noticeable lack of community involvement among churches in Sweet Home. It seems as if many Christians are content to simply go to church week after week and fellowship only with members of their own congregations and even certain members of their own church.

Is this really true Christian fellowship? There was a time when churches were a prominent part of the community and could be relied on to provide moral support and friendship to anyone in need of a sense of belonging. Today, however, Christians tend to cling to small groups and cliques who think and act like them. This is the opposite of what Jesus told his disciples in the Great Commission.

The early church was built on the principles of community. If you read the first few chapters of Acts, you’ll see that they shared everything, and if anyone needed anything, the other members would freely give of their own possessions. They were more like a family and not just a building full of people.

If the churches of Sweet Home are really serious about reaching out and making a difference in our community, they need to be more sensitive to the needs of all the members of their congregations, not just the familiar ones.

I would encourage people to get out of their comfort zone and make an effort to get acquainted with others who are not like them and who may just need a friend.
