City experiences rise in cop calls over past year

The number of calls for police service in Sweet Home increased by nearly 800 in 2010.

The Sweet Home Police Department received 8,512 calls in 2010, up from 7,758 in 2009.

Call loads peaked in 2005 with 9,547 calls. Sweet Home had 7,658 calls in 2000.

“We’re probably on a cycle where our common burglars have rotated out (of jail) into circulation,” said Sgt. Jason Van Eck. That bears out in what officers are seeing on the streets.

When they go behind bars again, Sweet Home will probably see a decrease in calls, he said.

Three key crimes increased in 2010.

Sweet Home had 92 burglaries in 2010, up from 53 in 2009. In 2005, there were 196 burglaries. Ten years ago, Sweet Home had 81 burglaries.

Sweet Home had 388 thefts in 2010, up from 264 in 2009, but down from 596 in 2005. In 2000, Sweet Home had 279 thefts.

In 2010, Sweet Home had 236 criminal mischief reports, up from 132 in 2009, 192 in 2005 and 106 in 2000.

Overall, Part I crimes, serious crimes, including burglary, theft, robbery, arson, aggravated assault, arson, rape, motor vehicle theft, murder and attempted murder, increased to 388 from 264. In 2005, Sweet Home had 596, while in 2009, Sweet Home had 279.

In 2010, Sweet Home had reports of one attempted murder, no murders, six forcible rapes, one arson, two robberies, 10 motor vehicle thefts and 16 aggravated assaults.

Part II crimes, less serious crimes, including criminal mischief, driving under the influence, drug offenses, runaway, disorderly conduct and a number of other offenses, were up in 2010. The city had 1,934, up from 1,786 in 2009, 1,819 in 2005 and 1,549 in 2000.

Sweet Home police arrested 911 adults on 1,225 charges and 350 juveniles on 431 charges. In 2009, police arrested 1,168 adults on 1,274 charges and 232 juveniles on 325 charges.

The department issued 1,245 citations, down from 1,379 in 2009 but up from 671 in 2005. In 2000, police issued 1,477 citations. The department issued 2,381 warnings, down from 3,125 in 2009 and up from 765 in 2005. In 2000, police issued 1,299 warnings.

Police estimated property losses of $333,673 in 2010, up from $311,650 in 2009. Property losses were $593,883 in 2005 and $320,114 in 2000.

Police recovered $71,376 in property in 2010, up from $56,135 in 2009 but down from $127,870 in 2005 and $121,035 in 2000.

Sweet Home officers drove 167,743 miles last year, down from 186,324 in 2009 but up from 142,897 in 2005 and 118,880 in 2000.
