Comics bring back memories

Editor:

I put aside my paint brushes, pen and ink to drop you a line regarding the changes made the Jan. 3, 2007 issue of The New Era.

The addition of three new comics is a good plus, and the one that really caught my attention is “They’ll Do It Every Time.” The strip was created by Jimmy Hatlo, who was sports columnist for The Call Bulletin newspaper in San Francisco.

Back in the 1930s, I sold one of the daily newspapers just below where Jimmy Hatlo did his sports cartooning for the Bulletin. It was after Hatlo left the paper in the 1930s that he created his two comic strips, “They’ll Do It Every Time” and “Little Iodine” with his assistant Bob Dunn.

Since Jimmy Hatlo’s death in 1963, Dunn signed the Hatlo features on which he had been assisted by Al Scaduto, who is now drawing the “They’ll Do It Every Time” comic strip running in The New Era now.

I can also relate to the article by Mona Waibel, “Remembering the Good Ol’ Days,” in the February issue of 55 Plus. Talking pictures were in full swing at the Roxy Theater when Mona attended the movies. When I was a kid, it was the era of the silent movies. The only sound heard was from the fellow playing the organ during the main feature.
