Members of the Sweet Home Parade Committee announced in an open letter on Oct. 20 that they have canceled plans to put on a lighted Christmas Parade on Dec. 4.
The Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center will still hold a parade that evening.
The City of Sweet Home approved permit requests from both the committee and the chamber to hold parades within half an hour of each other.
Both entities applied after a dispute concerning which group was in charge of the parade.
“The Parade Committee has been readying its paperwork for their parade, all the while not feeling the joy that parade planning should bring,” the letter from the committee stated. “We were being nagged by the fact that the community was being put into a spot having to choose which parade to enter. Our hearts knew that this was not right.”
The letter was signed by Debbie Walvatne, chairman; Cody Walvatne, vice-chairman; Sue Olson, secretary and treasurer; and Don Gonzales, image recorder.
The lighted Christmas parade planned by the Chamber of Commerce will begin at 5 p.m.
Those planning to participate in the Christmas parade should contact the Chamber of Commerce at (541) 367-6186 for further information and registration forms.
