Corinne Fritts

Corinne Fritts, 83, of Sweet Home, died May 13, 2011 at Shining Light Adult Foster Care in Crawfordsville with her husband by her side.

She was born Jan, 20, 1928 in Pawtucket, R.I. to Jerry and Vesta Ena (Harris) Fontaine. She was of Mohegan Native American ancestry.

She attended school in Canterbury, Conn. She spent many of her childhood years on a small farm outside Canterbury. She was no stranger to hard work.

While working at Bayuk Cigar Manufacturing, she met her husband Marion. They were married Feb. 20, 1960 in Philadelphia, Pa. She traveled with him as his naval career dictated, to such places as Guam, Bermuda, Winter Harbor, Me., Fallon, Nev. and home ports of his ships, Long Beach and San Diego, Calif. After her husband’s retirement from the United States Navy in 1975, they moved to the Crawfordsville area.

Mrs. Fritts excelled in all elected and appointed offices she held in both the VFW Post 3437 and District 14 Ladies Auxiliaries. She was president of VFW District 14 Ladies Auxiliary and received a President of the Year Award from the Department of Oregon Ladies Auxiliary for 1983-84. She also served many years on the VFW Convention Committee, was state president of the Amvets Ladies Auxiliary for 1990-91 and was the recipient of numerous awards and citations throughout the years of her association in both Ladies Auxiliaries.

Mrs. Fritts enjoyed trips cross country to visit relatives, and camping at the coast and in Eastern Oregon.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Marion Fritts of Sweet Home; sisters Geraldine Daniels of Levittown, Pa. and Charlotte Pepin of Canterbury, Conn.; brothers Jerry Fontaine Jr. of Moosup, Conn. and Frederick Fontaine of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; niece Donna Wheeler of Levittown, Pa.; nephews Robert Stevenson of Levittown, Pa. and James Stevenson of San Antonio, Texas; and a grandson.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Morris; and her parents.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Private Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the VFW and AMVET Ladies Auxiliary.
