Many of us likely didn’t give a lot of thought to the role of sports in our community until we didn’t have them.
Amidst the demands of parenting, coaching – and covering sports, we were more focused on making things happen than thinking a lot about why.
We were all set to publish our Spring Sports Preview section in mid-March, detailing the athletes and the expectations of coaches in various sports, when the general shutdown of athletics due to the threat of the coronavirus occurred.
We sat on it, hoping that the governor would loosen restrictions in time to enable some sort of spring season to occur, but obviously that hasn’t happened.
Consequently, we’re publishing the photos and brief synopses of what might have been. We had some very promising athletes and teams literally days away from kicking off what might have been a very memorable spring for Sweet Home.
Now that there’s no chance of sports returning before the end of the school year, we can at least give credit where it is due, to athletes who have put a lot of time and effort into developing their skills and who were primed for some big things, and their coaches, who facilitated it all.
These would have been the teams that represented Sweet Home in baseball, golf, softball and track and field.
Also, since we didn’t have the opportunity to get the photo of the all-league athletes for winter, we are including them as well.
We like to give credit where credit is due. These are the kids who made the teams and who were committed to representing Sweet Home on the fields of competition this season.
We appreciate them now more than ever.
