Crawfordsville Check

No, it wasn’t a traffic jam at Crawfordsville Bridge Wednesday morning, March 1.

Linn County Road Department crew members, as seen in the first photo, were inspecting the bridge, which is in need of repairs, Rob Kennedy, lead person for the county Bridge Crew, said.

The 105-foot Howe truss-type bridge, built in 1932, was bypassed by Highway 228 in 1963 and is now managed by the Linn County Parks and Recreation Department as a pedestrian bridge across the Calapooia River.

Kennedy said the bridge crew was checking the facility on behalf of the Parks Department. He said that some of the beams have been damaged by leakage, and that the goal is to get a tarp on the bridge “when we get some nicer weather” to protect it from the rain.

Since 1990, the bridge, which is listed on the National Register of HIstoric Places, has been the site of a Bridge Day festival held nearly annually in the summer.
