Sweet Home’s cross-country runners competed Saturday at the Northwest Classic at Lane Community College, where they saw some of the fastest competition in the 4A Division.
Siuslaw swept the team titles at the event.
No. 1 runner Jacob Sieminski had played football at Madras the night before, so “he ran tired,” Coach Kambria Schumacher said. Sieminski finished 33rd out of 147 runners, in 18:27.
Nate Coleman, coming off a bout with a cold, was still not 100 percent, she said, but he dropped well under 20 minutes with a 19:12 to place 53rd.
Aiden Shamek finished 94th, in 20:39, to round things out for the boys.
“Aiden dropped a fair amount of time,” Schumacher said.
Sophomore Lydia Wright, running her second cross-country race, finished solidly in the middle of the pack of 147 runners, at 70th, in 24:01.
“I felt like she raced this weekend, which was fun to watch,” Schumacher said. “She’s still working on getting into distance shape.
The Huskies are getting reinforcements, with senior Paige Chafin opting to join the team, which will give Wright company on the girls side, and Ryan Tyndall and Kyle Watkins joining the boys.
The Huskies have this weekend off, then will run Oct. 2 in the Harrier Classic at Bryant Park in Albany.
