Dakotah Keys, of Sweet Home, placed first in the javelin Sunday to win the 2006 Oregon State Junior Olympic title in the event.
Keys, who will be a freshman in high school next fall, threw 182 feet 5 inches. He also placed fourth in the long jump, going 19-0 3/4.
Although he qualified for the regional meet in the long jump, Keys elected not to advance, allowing another athlete to have an opportunity his mother, Lela Danforth, said.
“We felt that doing the Regional Decathlon on Thursday and Friday,it would be too much on him to then compete on Saturday morning in the long jump,” she said.
Keys placed fourth, with 4,967 points, in the state Junior Olympics decathlon June 17-18 and qualified for the regional meet, which will be in Salem July 6-7. If he can place first or second, or score 5,125 points, he will qualify for the national meet.
