Dan Borresen to speak at SHHS Senior Sports Awards Banquet

This year’s Senior Sports Award Banquet, sponsored by the SHHS Booster Club and the High School Athletic Department, will be held on May 31.

The banquet will be in the High School Cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 and may be purchased in the High School Snack Bar or by calling Peggy Emmert at 367-7140. Advanced ticket purchase would be appreciated.

The guest speaker will be Dan Borresen.

Borresen graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1983 after lettering in four sports: football, basketball, tennis, and track.

He began his college career at Willamette University in Salem, playing football and running track. Three years later, after deciding to become a teacher, he transferred to Western Oregon University, played one more year of football, and in 1989 earned his B.S. in Teaching Language Arts.

Immediately after graduating, he was hired by McNary High School in Keizer. In 1994, he earned his masters’ degree in language arts instruction from Western Oregon University.

He has coached football at Sweet Home High School, boys basketball at Central and McNary high schools, track and tennis at McNary and has spent seven years as McNary’s varsity volleyball coach.

As coach, his teams won five league championships while compiling a league record of 116 wins and 10 losses and an overall record of 183 wins and 42 losses.

He was voted Valley League coach of the year five times, and his 1998 team finished 33-5 with a fifth-place finish at the state tournament.

In 2002, he stopped coaching to spend more time with his wife, Kelley and son, Colby, on their small farm in Scio.

He enjoys bowhunting, hiking, fishing, reading, writing, horseback riding, weight lifting, pickup basketball and rodeos. He continues to teach at McNary High School while conducting volleyball camps and multi-sport coaching clinics throughout the state.
