He was born April 13, 1949 in Sandpoint, Idaho, to William Edward and Iris Lorraine (Schilling) McMurtrey.
He served in the United States Navy in Vietnam and Korea from Jan. 29, 1969 to Dec. 16, 1972. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
