Marshall Ackley of Nyssa High School traveled nearly the width of the state of Oregon to compete in the decathlon hosted by Sweet Home High School March 31 and April 1.
It was worth it for Ackley, who scored 6188 points to win the 10-event competition.
The real story over the weekend, though, was the young talent who showed up to compete.
Of the 11 Sweet Home competitors, the top finisher was Sweet Home Junior High eighth-grader Dakotah Keys, who finished no lower than 10th out of the 18 competitors in any event to score 4549 for sixth place.
The boys’ competition was out of reach for the rest of the field by the last event, the grueling 1500, but you wouldn’t have known it by the thrilling finish.
Sweet Home’s Ramiro Santana, normally a 400 specialist, managed to stay in the lead pack until the final lap, when he and Mapleton’s Blake Shappell dueled it out for the last 300 meters. They tied at the finish line in 4:56.4, with Keys (4.57.1) and K.C. Hanscam (4.58.9), also of Sweet Home, closing fast.
In the girls heptathlon, a a seven-event competition, Erin Funhouser of Sherman County scored 3878 to win over Salem eighth-grader Megan Hingston, who scored 3013 for second.
The top finisher of Sweet Home’s four competitors was Ashley Danielson, who finished with 2244.
