Depleted track team manages some individual bright spots

The Sweet Home track and field team traveled to Pleasant Hill Thursday, March 23, for their second meet of the year. The event, which included teams from Pleasant Hill, Marist, Douglas, South Umpqua, Sutherlin and Sweet Home, was non-scoring, which was fortunate for the Huskies.

Sweet Home was missing many of its most experienced competitors, who were either participating in the school drama production which opened that night in Sweet Home, or were on their way to San Francisco for the Acquire the Fire youth conference, which was held last weekend.

Coach Billy Snow noted, however that it was a good opportunity to pay attention to some unproven newcomers to the team.

One bright spot was sophomore Land Florek, who ran the 100 meters in the season opener at Marist. At Pleasant Hill he was entered in the longer sprints, and placed third in the 400 and seventh in the 200, though first in his heat, in a field of veterans, including teammate Ole Bond, who placed second overall in the 200. Florek also ran the second-fastest 400-meter relay leg of the day, in 59.5, behind fellow sophomore Ramiro Santana, who ran 57.1 in the relay and finished second in the open 400 in 56.54, just getting nipped at the wire. Bond ran the first open 400 of his career, finishing fourth in 58.2, coach Billy Snow said.

Brandon Wiest continued to show promise in his first season in high school track and field, adding four inches to his personal best in the high jump to win with a leap of 5-8, and placing third in the long jump (17-1) and in the triple jump (36-4), despite having trouble with his take-off marks in those events.

Alex Brown finished second in the javelin, throwing 158-8 in a much-improved performance over his first outing of the season (144-0 at Marist), but still shy of the 160-8 PR he set last year as a junior.

KC Hanscam took second in the pole vault with a leap of 9-6.

The girls were missing a number of key athletes, but saw some bright spots.

Amanda Basham was third in the 400, and Kambria Schumacher, out for her first meet of the season after a bout with illness, finished fourth in the 800. Hannah Swanson, who, Snow said, is battling a sore leg, finished second in the 100 hurdles, while Hannah McClaskey finished second in the shot, discus and javelin.

The Huskies will host the Sweet Home Heptathlon/Decathlon this Friday and Saturday at Husky Stadium.
