Sweet Home’s varsity boys finished fourth in a field of 40 teams at the Northwest Duals wrestling competition, held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 and 28, hosted by West Albany at the Linn County Convention Center.
The boys, who were missing starters in four weights, finished fourth out of 16 teams in the championship bracket, as Crater defeated Thurston to win the championship.
Sweet Home’s second boys team finished third in its pool, which included Newberg and Sprague, which finished ahead of the Huskies, and Willamina and Sherwood, which they defeated.
“It was quite a weekend,” said Head Coach Steve Thorpe.
The varsity team went 6-2 and the junior varsity team was 5-3 after a tie-breaker with Centennial (42-42 score) that, Thorpe said, gave the win to Sweet Home based on the number of falls (see results below).
In the girls tournament, the Huskies finished second in the third-place pool, behind West Albany.
Thurston won the championship, followed by Dallas and Redmond.
“We were down several girls,” Thorpe said, noting that sickness, injuries and family obligations took their toll on Sweet Home’s lineup. “We literally only wrestled nine girls the whole time.”
Despite that, the girls finished 4-3, with sophomore 120-pounder Alizeah Weikel winning all her matches after being out for nearly two weeks with a shoulder injury she suffered at the War of the Roses tournament on Dec. 14.
Bailey Chafin won both the matches she wrestled at 130 pounds, as she recuperated from an injury she suffered at Reno, Thorpe said.
“The girls just kind of overcame some adversity,” he said. “Amelia (Sullens) and Bailey were injured, but they still showed up and made weight.”
For the boys, Riley Vaughn went undefeated at 120 pounds for the No. 2 team and both Ashton Swanson (190) and Jesse Landtroop (120) went undefeated on the weekend for the No. 1 team.
“The second team, they were 5-3, and that was against some of the toughest competition around,” Thorpe said. “Just because we’re sending in a second team doesn’t mean we’re wrestling second teams.”
The varsity lineup was depleted by what Thorpe called “supposed injuries,” which required some unplanned “adjustments.”
Killan Boggs, normally a junior varsity 138-pounder, literally stepped up the morning of to wrestle with the varsity team at 144, which allowed Russell Dickerman to move up to 150, and Jackson Knight also wrestled up a weight class, to 165 from 157.
“We only had to forfeit 106 in a couple of matches because of that,” Thorpe said. “They didn’t get asked to be bumped up, they just did it. It was very unselfish.
“We had two forfeits and two JV wrestlers in our varsity lineup, and we took fourth. We would have been in the finals, I believe, if we hadn’t had to forfeit at 150 pounds. I’m very proud of our guys. They just came together, took on each other’s burden and just stepped up. It’s very cool when you get to see that.”
The fact that the No. 2 team did well “kind of showed off just how deep we are in our program,” Thorpe said.
He noted that 120-pounder sophomore Keegan Jefferson “didn’t win all of his matches, but he had a great weekend. He was kind of our spark that we needed against Redmond (a 40-35 win in the championship round).”
Jefferson, he said, came from behind to get a fall against Redmond’s Sam Vessey with 5:54 on the clock.
Also turning in “strong showings” were Dylan Davis at 132, Kyle Zajic at 157, Dylan Sharp at 220 and Colton Bennett at 285.
“There was a lot of unselfishness.”
Next up for the Huskies, the girls will wrestle Thursday, Jan. 2, at the Lady Buffaloes Tournament in Madras, then both the boys and girls will wrestle Friday, Jan. 3, at South Albany in the Linn County Championships. The meet starts at 9:30 a.m.
