A “skeleton” Sweet Home wrestling team did not place in the 28-team Northwest Duals at Westview High School Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27-28, but they gave some big schools a run for their money.
The Huskies, who had some gaps in their lineup thanks to sickness, managed to stay close to several big 6A Division wrestling programs and beat West Albany 51-21.
“It’s hard to forfeit three or four weights and be competitive,” Coach Steve Thorpe said of his patchwork line-up. “Head to head, we’re competitive, but the score doesn’t reflect that.”
The benefit of the big tournament is that Sweet Home wrestlers get eight matches over two days, he said, but the Huskies were missing their regular 182-pounder, Spencer Knight, and lost 145-pounder Ryan Adams who pinned his first opponents before Thorpe sent him to the stands because he was too sick to continue.
“If we win the matches we forfeited, that’s a 36-point swing,” Thorpe noted.
Cole Ashcraft, Shane Rivera and Troy Hazelton filled in the blanks in weights they don’t normally wrestle at, he said.
“A lot of our former depth in our program isn’t wrestling this year,” Thorpe said. “They’re choosing to do other things.”
On the bright side, 126-pounder Tyler Schilling, a junior, has already won more than 20 matches this season, all but two by falls. He pinned six of the seven opponents he wrestled last weekend and scored a major decision over the other one.
Thorpe said Schilling’s record reflects the physicality and preparation he brings to the mat.
“He pays the price and puts in his time. He wrestled spring and summer. He did all the extra stuff. He plays soccer too. He’s not just a one-sport, one-dimensional athlete.”
He said Schilling, along with Ben Terry, Dylan Elder and Anthony Hardee are providing leadership the team needs.
“Ben is wrestling hard every time he steps on the mat,” Thorpe said, “and Daylan Elder had some good wins. He’s trying to get some consistency.”
Freshman Kobe Olson is nearing 20 wins and sophomore Tyrel Miller has also provided consistency in the lower weights, he said.
“Aaron Blanchard spent last year as a JV wrestler and Jason Miller, our 160-pounder, never put on wrestling shoes until two years ago.
“We’re still growing. We’re still trying to find out where we fit in. We’re having to sacrifice in some areas because we have to cover others that have greater priority right now.
“It’s hard to be the second man behind such a great group that we graduated last year, then step in and take charge of the team.”
In addition to the Westview tournament, Sweet Home also sent a junior varsity team to Jefferson Friday, where they won three duals, beating McKay’s JV, West Albany’s JV and Jefferson’s varsity. Scores were not available at press time.
The Huskies will compete in the Todd Sermon Memorial Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3.
