School District 55 has repaired or replaced several of its roofs, or is in the process of doing so, among them two buildings that are no longer used by the district.
“We have a number of roofs that are need of replacement,” said Supt. Don Schrader earlier this summer.
Three of them are being completed by district maintenance workers, including the track shed, the Husky Field restroom and the High School wood shop.
The High School D Building got a new roof this summer, Schrader said. District employees removed the roof, and a contractor replaced it.
That roof had been leaking badly and needed to be replaced quickly, he said.
The largest projects include Crawfordsville, Pleasant Valley and Sweet Home Junior High gymnasium.
The School Board needs to think about what the district is going to do with Crawfordsville and Pleasant Valley, Schrader said. “If someone’s in that building, we’ll have to fix it.”
Crawfordsville, closed at the end of the 2010-11 school year, has two programs leasing space, including Head Start and the Linn-Benton-Lincoln Education Service District’s Early Childhood Education program.
Little Promises Day Care leases the Pleasant Valley building.
The board will meet in a future work session to discuss the future of the two buildings, Schrader said. He estimated the cost of each to be in the neighborhood of $40,000.
Schrader said most of the contractors who submitted preliminary bids declined to bid on the Junior High gym. Because of its height, it requires specialized attention.
The district will have to do something about all of these roofs in the next few years, Schrader said. “Hopefully, we can find money for them. It’s one of the reasons the board put aside maintenance funds.”
