April 13, 1927 – March 26, 2011
Doris Lillian Slater, 83, died March 26, 2011.
She and her twin sister Dorothy were born April 13, 1927 on Fern Hill, near Foster, the 10th and 11th of 16 children of Otto and Pearl Slater.
She attended Fern Hill and Sunnyside Schools, and graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1946.
Miss Slater worked at Eastern Washington College of Education as a cook for six years. Later she attended Merritt Davis Business College in Salem. She became an employee at Cookes Stationery Store in Salem and worked as a bookkeeper for 50 years. Because of health issues she was forced to retire at the age of 82 and then moved to Crawfordsville to live with family.
Miss Slater never married but was the special fun-loving, nurturing aunt to all her nieces and nephews. She was a member of First Christian Church in Salem and later attended Marcola Christian Church.
She is survived by a brother, Caryl Slater of La Pine; sisters Shirley Anderson of Sitka, Alaska, Gertie Nye of Prineville, Jean Robinson and Gayle Thomas of Crawfordsville.
Evergreen Hospice made it possible for her to remain at home until her passing. The family greatly appreciates them and the help of Norma, a special friend.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Marcola Christian Church. Private burial will be at Gilliland Cemetery.
Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
