Double duty: Amber Meyers edits

Alex Paul

Busy, busy girl.

It isn’t unusual for a high school senior to be yearbook editor, or editor of the school newspaper.

But Amber Meyers gave new meaning to those job titles this year, holding down both and according to SHHS advisor Jon Cohrs , handling the challenge admirably.

In a couple weeks, Meyers, the daughter of Robert and Debi Meyers, will move to Ricks, Idaho where she will attend BYU Idaho in the fall. She will also write for the school’s newspaper, the Scroll, for which she earned a scholarship.

“I chose BYU Idaho because the school has a good journalism program,” Meyers said. “I became interested in writing my sophomore year and lat year, after the first issue of the Huskian came out, Mr. Cohrs asked me to be an assistant editor and then editor.”

Does Meyers enjoy editing the yearbook or school paper the most?

“Well, they’re really two different things,” she said. “With the yearbook, I was able to work more with photographers and to develop pages with more feeling. The Huskian was more timely news stories and less emotion.”

In addition to double duty, Meyers also helped guide the yearbook through a year of big changes.

For example, the yearbook was delivered to students on Wednesday of last week. In prior years, it arrived in the fall, after seniors were long gone from the hallways.

This year’s book is also filled with color photos and is being printed by a different company than in past years.

Hard work has paid off, Mr. Cohrs said.

“Sales are up and kids are talking about the yearbook, that’s good,” Mr. Cohrs said. “Amber has helped create an environment where it’s a positive experience for the entire staff. She did a great job building a team.

“I appreciate how busy she is and yet, she does a great job with both publications. She kep us moving forward and was amazing at organizing and trouble shooting.”

In addition to publications, Meyers was active in in drama, LINK and with her church youth group.

She also was a member of National Honor Society, earned academic excellence awards and was on the honor roll.
