Douglas “Doug” Schamp, 60 of Brownsville died Monday. He was born to Harold and Marion (Salter) Schamp in Deadwood, S.D.
Mr. Schamp grew up in Corvallis, attending the schools there. He joined the Navy at age 17 and was trained in nuclear submarines. After graduating from Oregon State University he entered officers training in Pensicola, Fla. During his military career Mr. Schamp traveled all over the world. He was a member of the elite Blue Angels flying squad from 1981-1983.
He retired from the military in 1991 in San Diego, Calif., eventually returning to Oregon and settling in Brownsville.
He loved his Harley Davidson and started two chapters of the Oregon Veterans Motorcycle Organization in Burns and Sweet Home. He was a man with a large heart who showed kindness to others.
Mr. Schamp is survived by daughter, Kristi Hoaglin of Portland; sister, Sharon Bennett of Palm Springs, Calif.; beloved friend Jan Schamp of Eugene; nephews; three grandchildren and many friends both from the military and locally.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
