Doyle Johnson

March 24, 1926 – Dec. 1, 2008

Doyle Eugene Johnson, 82, died with his family at his side on Dec. 1, 2008.

He was born March 24, 1926 and raised in Genoa, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953, spending most of his time in Korea; he was honorably discharged as master sergeant.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark in 1956 and received his master’s degree from the University of Oregon.

Mr. Johnson married Audrey May Stapleton on Nov. 28, 1951, and they moved to Sweet Home in 1958. He taught at Sweet Home High School and was a favorite of many students.

He retired in 1985 but always enjoyed meeting and chatting with his former students.

He was a long-time member of the Sweet Home City Council in the 1970s, served one term as mayor and was awarded the Sweet Home Jr. First Citizen Award.

Mr. Johnson loved to travel and after he and his wife retired, they traveled extensively. Though he will be remembered for his love of learning, fishing, playing the guitar and golfing, his heart and soul was his family, whom he loved without reserve.

He is survived by his wife; daughters Taryn (Berry) and Leigh Ann (MacKenzie); six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sister and brother.

A memorial service will be held in Sweet Home at Fir Lawn Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

Remembrances may be directed to Fir Lawn, to be used in providing clean drinking water around the world.
