The Sweet Home Police Department, in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration, reported that 53 people dropped off unwanted prescription medicines totaling 128 pounds during a prescription drug disposal drive held Saturday morning.
Old prescriptions may be dropped off free at the Police Department, 1950 Main St., at any time. Animal medications are also accepted, but syringes lancets and sharps are not allowed.
SHPD has taken in more than 250 pounds of unwanted or expired medications since 2010.
Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
