I am saddened by the deliberate killing of our “Neighborhood Nutria.” He or she was a resident of 4430 Long St. and lived in the ditch along our road.

It was a friendly sort, who only came out to trim our lawn. Many mornings, we would watch it munch our lawn in apparent satisfaction, while we were happy we didn’t have to mow.

The nutrias and their offspring were so cute. They munched in unison as they ate only our weeds around our trees. I am so sad, since they were a source of our entertainment and they did so much for us.

They have had a bad rap, since farmers had to deal with them tunneling into their fields and disrupting the irrigation systems. But, here they kept the ditch clean and didn’t do any harm. I will miss the little creatures.
