Effie Borden

April 10, 1917 – July 14, 2008

Effie Borden, 91, died July 14, 2008.

She was born April 10, 1917 in Mansfield, Texas to George and Martha Elrod and grew up in Gracemont, Okla. When she was 18 she married Ralph E. Borden.

The Bordens farmed in Gracemont and had seven children before Mr. Borden died when Mrs. Borden was 43. After a few more years, she and the children moved to St. Paul.

Mrs. Borden moved to Sweet Home with her oldest daughter, Avis, after her children were grown. She lived the remainder of her life in Sweet Home, with intermittent visits to her other children in the Saint Jo area of Texas and the Scotts Mills/Salem area.

She was a sweet, gentle Christian woman who spent most of her hours reading from her Bible and doing Bible lessons. She was a prayer warrior and a blessing to her family. She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ of Sweet Home, where she was well loved and cared for by her church family.

She could rock a baby like no other. Her favorite time of the day was when the mail came. She enjoyed her daughters taking her to the beauty shop to be pampered and their long trips to Texas to see her boys. She loved flowers, quilting and enjoyed putting puzzles together, no matter if the pieces actually fit.

Mrs. Borden is survived by her daughter-in-law Janice Borden of Sweet Home; daughters Avis Kittson and Avis’ ex-husband Tom of Sweet Home, Betty Kneeland and husband Tom of Scotts Mills, and Judy Frymire and husband Jim of Salem; sons Ralph Borden and wife Linda of Saint Jo, Texas, and David Borden and wife Ginger of Gainesville, Texas; a brother, Claude Elrod of Madera, Calif.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter; her oldest son James Borden; her parents; three sisters and three brothers.

Graveside services were held July 19, 2008 in Gracemont Cemetery, Gracemont, Okla. C.E. Cole officiated and services were directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Saint Jo, Texas.
