Elmira blanks Husky girls

Elmira 6

Sweet Home 0

The Husky softball team lost its season opener 6-0 to Elmira away on Thursday.

Elmira had “five runs in the first inning,” Coach Rob Younger said. “I think a little bit of it was we were very nervous and excited to play.”

Elmira batched some hits together and scored them, Coach Younger said. “Then we settled down.”

Elmira scored on more run in the sixth inning.

“They’re the defending state champion,” Coach Younger said. “I thought we competed well. We hit the ball hard at times but right at people.”

“I thought offensively, Idahna Huenergardt, she had our only hit,” Coach Younger said. “Cait and Dani Thireault both swung the bat really well. Defensively, I thought that Michelle Cliver and Nicki Aerni played well up the middle.”

The Huskies gave up only one error on the game.

Makenzie Marchbanks “settled down and really threw well after the first inning I thought,” Coach Younger said. “It’s a first game. This is a young team that needs some experience. I think that we’re going to improve immensely over the course of this season.”

Correction: Cait Thireault was inadvertently omitted from the softball preview published in last week’s The New Era. She plays centerfield. We regret the error.
