Emmert 14 of 15 serving to lead Huskies in VB win over Molalla
Aggressive play led the Husky volleyball squad to 25-10, 25-17 and 25-19 wins over Molalla Wednesday on the Husky home court.
Coach Heide Nichol said her squad kept their level of play high and “played with intensity.”
It was a winning night for the program overall, as the frosh won 25-21 and 27-25 and the JV won 25-18 and 25-15.
“What was nice was that we were able to get our JV/Varsity players into the game a lot and were able to see them do some very good things,” Coach Nichol said.
Senior Nikki Emmert had an outstanding night setting, completing 31 of 32 and adding 10 assists. Julie Burcham had 19 sets and 4 assists.
At the serving line, Emmert was 14 of 15 with seven aces.
Freshman Jamie Burcham had a strong showing in her first varsity tilt. Burcham, a 5’10” middle blocker was 17-18 and had four aces.
“She’s played a lot of volleyball,” Coach Nichol said of her up and coming Husky.
Chelsea Gagner looked strong with six kills and was 11 of 12. The right side hitter also had a big night with 13 digs.
Hannah Swanson and Kate Thireault had five kills each. Swanson had 12 digs and Thireault six.
Saturday the Huskies competed at the Newport tournament where they lost 22-25 and 18-25 to Valley Catholic.
They beat Crescent Valley 25-12 and 25-23, split with Taft 25-23 (won) and 21-25 (lost) and lost to Toledo in a single consolation bracket game.
“We were very scrappy,” Coach Nichol said. “We kept pushing them but we made too many mistakes.”
The Huskies are 2-2 in league play and 2-5 overall.
They played Stayton Tuesday and travel to Sisters on Thursday.
“Stayton is always strong with quite a few big kids,” Coach Nichol said. “We have to really step up to play them. We’ll definitely play Sisters tougher than we did early in the season.”
Coach Nichol praised her squad for being hard workers and an excellent lineup to coach.
“What we’re missing is someone who can really smash the ball,” Coach Nichol said. “We’re more solid this year than last year. We just need to get our confidence up and play that way.”
