Sweet Home Health

Fair Aug. 16

Learn about local health resources at the eighth annual Sweet Home Community Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Sweet Home High School.

More than 30 tables of health-related information and resources will be available, including free clothing and back-to-school backpacks for kids.

More than 15 local agencies and organizations will be present to provide information about their services, ranging from housing assistance to substance abuse to hospice care. Admission is free.

LCSWA to hold 

mill tour Aug. 19

Linn County Small Woodlands Association members will tour the Weyerhaeuser Santiam Mill at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 30440 Fairview Road.

The mill, built in 2008, covers 120 acres and employs 160 people. The tour will include visitor orientation, safety talk, tour, and a question and answer session. Participants will gather at the gate prior to 9 a.m.

Requirements to enter the mill include closed- toe shoes, long pants and long hair must be in a bun.

Art en Plein Air

at Foster Lake

Artists and art watchers are invited to participate in a “Plein Air” artist event from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Foster Lake near Edgewater.

“Plein air,” a French term, is the practice of creating artwork outdoors. Artists are invited to bring their art supplies (and table, chair, easel – whatever you need) to work on their own projects and enjoy the company of other artists.

Non-artists may come and watch the artists at work. You might see painting, drawing, sculpting, or perhaps even jewelry. There will be some art supplies available to try out yourself.

The event will be located in the grass between Foster Lake and the Edgewater at Foster townhomes. Parking is the dirt lot just past 60th Avenue off Highway 20 and additional parking is available in the lot on the corner of Foster Dam Road and Poplar Street.

Wolthuis sisters to 

perform Aug. 23

René Wolthuis Johnson and Dr. Carmen Wolthuis Hall will present a piano and organ concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1155 22nd Ave., Sweet Home.

Johnson is a pianist and organist based in Arlington, Va. Hall is a pianist, educator, and founder of Timpanogos Chamber Music. She also directs Young Pianists International, teaches at Utah Valley University and currently serves as president of the Utah Music Teachers Association.

The concert will feature a diverse program that will include works by Widor, Kapustin, Brahms, Gounod, Mascagni and Bédard.

 

Hands on History 

back in Brownsville

Hands on History returns to Brownsville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, at Library Park, 101 Park Avenue.

It’s a fun-filled day in the park, featuring traditional pioneer and Native American skills, activities and crafts.

It’s free, fun and for the whole family.

Hands on History includes activities like beeswax candle dipping, cornhusk doll making and washing clothes in an old galvanized tub on a washboard, which is especially fun on a hot day. Attendees can listen to old-time fiddlers, watch a mountain man load a flintlock rifle, hear authentic Kalapuyan stories, enjoy wagon rides and pan for gold.

Hands on History is sponsored by the Linn County Museum Friends. The Linn County Historical Museum is at 101 Park Ave. in downtown Brownsville. Library Park is next door to the museum.

Spend time at 

Healing Garden

Lebanon Community Hospital is hosting a series of monthly cultural events at the Boulder Falls Event Center and patio, 605 Mullins Dr. through the summer.

Healing Garden Lecture: Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m – Diane Durston, curator emeritus from the Portland Japanese Garden, will discuss Japanese philosophies of Wabi Sabi and forest bathing. Registration is required.

Sweet Home’s Community Market is held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 27 in Library Square, at the corner of Kalmia Street and 12th Avenue.

Some two dozen vendors sell a wide range of food and other fun stuff. Space is available for a limited number of vendors. Deliver for Meals 

on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Sweet Home is in urgent need of volunteer drivers, delivering free meals to local seniors and disabled adults in the Sweet Home area.

Delivery days are Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The role is best suited for people available in the mid-day, as meals go out at noon. Volunteers work one to two days a week for about 2.5 hours each shift.

Meals on Wheels is managed by Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments and operated by local volunteers. Volunteers package fresh meals in the kitchen and the drivers deliver them. Many local people count on this food as a primary source of nutrition.

Museum needs help from locals

East Linn Museum is seeking volunteers and items that are needed for the operation of the museum.

The museum needs volunteers for its operations to replace retiring volunteers. New volunteers are not required to know anything about the museum or how to operate a computer. The museum operates three days a week from Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Supplies needed by the museum include: copy paper, postage stamps, legal size envelopes, paper towels, toilet paper, glass cleaner, all purpose cleaner and Ajax.

ODFW wildlife contest 

seeks arts, photos

The Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife invites artists to submit their work for the 2026 stamp art competitions.

The winning artists receive a $2,000 award and their artwork is used to produce collector’s stamps and other promotional items with sale proceeds benefiting Oregon’s fish, wildlife and their habitats. The three contests are:

Habitat Conservation Stamp – Art entries must feature a Strategy Species identified in the Oregon Conservation Strategy in its appropriate habitat. Not all species in the Strategy are eligible, so please use the qualifying list of species. Artists are asked to use the Recommendations for Packaging Artwork on the Contest Rules’ final page.

A panel will judge artwork based on artistic composition, anatomical accuracy of the species and general appeal. Collector’s stamps, art prints and other promotional materials are produced from first-place artwork. Proceeds from product sales are used for habitat improvement, research surveys and conservation projects.

Interested artists are encouraged to visit ODFW’s stamp art competition webpage for more information on the contests and to view entries from previous years.

Entries will be accepted from Aug. 29 until 5 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the ODFW headquarters, 4034 Fairview Industrial Dr., SE, Salem, OR 97302.

Sunshine Industries invites the public to a free dinner every Monday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at 1333 Clark Mill Road. Because everyone matters.

 

Free health clinic Tuesdays

The East Linn Community Clinic is held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at 1600 Main St. in Lebanon.

This is a medical clinic that provides primary and acute medical care for under- or uninsured individuals.  On select nights, Western U COMP-NW offers osteopathic manipulative medicine to treat chronic and acute pain.  Patients may walk in or schedule appointments.
