Ex-Husky champion wrestler Eugene Luke killed in wreck

A former state champion wrestler for Sweet Home died early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash near Junction City.

Friends found Thomas Eugene Luke, 32, of Albany and a friend, Ian Andrew Adams, 21, of Junction City in a wrecked pickup in a field on the east side of Washburn Lane after the two were overdue arriving home, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Department.

Units from the Junction City Fire Department and Lane Rural Ambulance responded to the location, where Luke was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Sheriff’s Capt. William Thompson, Luke’s pickup had been southbound on Washburn when it left the roadway to the east, went through a ditch and rolled in the field.

Adams was transported by Life Flight Helicopter to Riverbend Hospital with serious injuries, according to reports.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday.

Luke won the state 3A 215-pound title as a senior under Coach Norm Davis in 1995, finishing the season with a 30-1 record with 20 falls, one of three Husky wrestlers that year to win a state championship.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements, which had not been determined as of Monday evening. For information visit http://www.sweethomefuneral.com.
