Experience counts at Sweet Home’s first home track meet

One thing is for certain for Sweet Home’s track and field team this season: Nothing’s changed in the Oregon West League. It’s a test all the way around and particularly with teams like Newport and Philomath.

That was the case at Sweet Home’s first home meet of the seaso, at Husky Field, where they hosted those teams, plus Pleasant Hill.

There were a lot of great performances, some by the Huskies, but not enough to outscore deep and experienced teams – yet.

Newport has 50 boys on its roster, 15 of them upperclassmen, and it showed as they outpointed Philomath (which has 15 upperclassmen on its 20-man boys roster) 206-177. Sweet Home, which has 12 upperclassmen out of 30 in its line-up, was third, with 115.

Although the teams are more balanced on the girls side in terms of numbers of participants, Sweet Home was relying on five juniors and seniors and 23 underclassmen, for many of whom track is a new experience, and Philomath’s experience – 15 upperclassmen and its usual well-drilled youngsters, to score 317. 5 points to Newport’s 143.75 and 96.75 for Sweet Home, which didn’t have a winner on the girls side. Pleasant Hill scored 82.

That doesn’t mean the Huskies didn’t have winners.

“A lot went good Thursday,” Head Coach Nathan Whitfield said. “It seemed like everybody on the track dropped half a second.”

Mason Lopez threw a season’s best 144-10 to win the javelin, and Aiden Shamek was first in the long jump with a season’s best 19-3¼. The boys 4×100 relay of Shamek, Dakota Seiber, Von James and Charley Crawford finished first in 47.55. Crawford was second in the shot and Tanner Waldrop was the runner-up in the discus, both to Newport’s Noah Daniels, who won both events.

Crawford was third in the 100, but he cut half a second off his season-opening time of 12.81 from Marc 30 to run a personal-best 12.18.

Although the girls didn’t have a winner, they were knocking on the door. Victoria Ferrioli was second in the 100 in a personal-best 13.67, and teamed with Amelia Sullins, Stephanie Saultz and Kaylynn Mamac for second in the short relay (53.93).

The Husky girls were fourth in the 4×400 relay, in a tight race behind first-place Philomath (4:12). Second through fourth places were decided by a little over a second.

“You look at our relay team (Ivy Dewitte, Lydia Wright, Mamac and Sullens) and there’s not a single upperclassman, yet they are still competitive,” Whitfield said, noting that quartet cut 13 seconds off its first effort at that event a week before.

Mamac,a freshman, in her first high school high hurdles race, was second in 20.46 to Philomath’s Madison Schaffer (19.94), and finished third in the 300 hurdles.

Sophomore Kallie Maas tied for third in the javelin in her first effort at that event, throwing a personal-best 83-10, and fellow sophomore Lydia Wright was right behind, taking fifth.

“Kallie kind of popped out of nowhere,” Whitfield said. “We didn’t expect that. I think we’ve found a home for her.

“We’re so young. We’re just developing.

The Huskies will see all the teams in the league this Thursday, at the Philomath Invitational. Along with Cascade, Newport and Philomath, teams the Huskies have seen thus far, the meet is scheduled to include Cottage Grove, Sisters, Siuslaw and Stayton.
