Feb. 8 fun run to support The New Era

Sweet Home Rotary Club members are planning a fun run on Saturday, Feb. 8, to raise money to support The New Era as the newspaper owners work to rebuild the newspaper.

Ken Bronson, a Rotary member, said that the race will be “a true fun run,” which will be timed, but rather than having an established entry fee, it will be up to participants to donate whatever they desire to support the newspaper.

He noted that the planned run is an unofficial resurrection of what used to be the Sweetheart Run in Sweet Home, which was held around Valentines Day.

Bronson said organizers’ goal is $7,800 in donations, which “is enough money to support 50% of the non-staff newspaper production costs for 12 weeks.”

The run, which is also being supported by Steelhead Fitness, will start and end at Sankey Park and will be timed “the old-fashioned way,” with a stopwatch at the finish line.

5K run/walk and 10K run courses will be designated for participants and a water stop is planned at a point midway on the courses, which will overlap each other. Those events will start at 10 a.m.

Also, a 1-mile run/walk for kids is planned, open to all ages, at 9:30 a.m.

“This is no-cost, donation only,” Bronson said. “The key thing is to help support our Sweet Home paper, The New Era. This is our community paper.”

Those who are not eager to run but are interested in supporting the newspaper while it regains financial equilibrium can donate independently, he said. Bronson is also working out an arrangement with the Sweet Home Community Foundation to manage money collected at the race and any additional donations for the newspaper.
