Fire burns acre on Berlin Rd.

Sweet Home fire crews responded to a grass fire at 28660 Berlin Rd. Sunday at approximately 11:37 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a “brush fire moving through reprod toward second-growth timber,” Fire Chief Mike Beaver said. The fire burned about one acre.

“It was really moving fast, and small fir trees were exploding into flames,” resident Ivan Vandehei said. “Of course it took a few minutes for our volunter fire department to get there and the fire was gathering steam, getting close to the barn and house.

“As soon as the firefighters arrived, they went right to work and moved fast. in no time the fire, under very dry conditions, with a breeze, was contained and under control. What could have been a very big and bad fire became small.

Oregon Department is investigating the cause of the fire. The cause was unknown on Monday.

Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District, ODF, Lebanon Fire District and Brownsville Fire Department responded to the fire with nine vehicles and more than 40 firefighters.

“Amazing the volunteers of our community giving up their time any day, no matter what they are busy with, all so fast, thorough and professional about the business of putting out or controlling fire,” Vandehei said.
