Sweet Home’s varsity boys placed seventh at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, during a busy week for Sweet Home wrestling.
A team of junior varsity wrestlers finished fourth at a duals tournament in Harrisburg, also on Friday and Saturday.
And all that came after the Huskies notched dual meet wins over Elmira (57-3), Willamette 78-6, Junction City 72-10 and Newport 84-0.
Coach Steve Thorpe said a top-seven finish at Reser’s is nothing to be ashamed of.
“It’s the toughest team in the state of Oregon,” he said, noting that Sweet Home was the only 4A team in the 19-school field. “It has become an iconic event. What they’ve done to make it what it is is pretty incredible.
“Every weight is just tough. I was pretty pleased to finish seventh. There was not a lot of difference between seventh and fourth.”
Newberg, a national-quality team, won with 287.5 points, followed by Crescent Valley (241.5), Thurston (173) and Mountain View (145).
The Huskies tied with West Linn for seventh, with 121 points each, behind five individual place-winners, led by sophomore Kyle Sieminski, who was second at 106 pounds.
Senior Kyle Watkins was sixth at 120 pounds, junior Jacob Sieminski was third at 126, sophomore David Steagall was fifth at 195 and senior Colby Gazeley was sixth at 220.
“Kyle Sieminski makes it into the finals where he lost to a top-20 nationally ranked kid,” Thorpe said. “Colbey Gazeley made what was really his debut at 220 in this tournament and he wrestled incredible. David Steagall took fifth place, collecting falls along the way. And for Kyle Watkins, a senior, to go out placing in that tournament is just pretty darn good.
“Nobody in this tournament is bad. Everybody is good. It’s a good meet to come out of as we go into the home stretch.”
While the varsity was at Reser’s, a Liberty High School in Hillsboro on Friday and Saturday, a team of junior varsity wrestlers competed at the Harrisburg Duals Friday and Saturday, where they finished fourth. Sweet Home finished second in its pool on Friday, beating Douglas 54-22, Oakland 54-30, and losing 50-24 to Dayton.
On Saturday, the Huskies lost 51-30 to eventual champion Rainier, then fell 48-25 to Dayton in the third-place match.
The Huskies visit Philomath on Tuesday, Feb. 1, where they will match up with the hosts and with visiting Siuslaw in league duals. They were originally scheduled to host Banks on Thursday, which would have been Senior Night, but the Braves backed out last week and Thorpe was able to schedule Estacada. Wrestling starts at 6 p.m. For updates, check the school’s website or wrestling Facebook page.
