Flowers planted, S.H. veterans memorial awaits brick orders

The multi-colored flowers are planted and blooming and the bark mulch is in place.

Hundreds of bricks have been set in place, saving space for the monogrammed ones that will eventually succeed them.

Sweet Home’s Veteran’s Memorial is nearly done, according to project coordinator Cory Lowen. Now is the time to order bricks to honor veterans, living or dead. Specific sections of bricks will be placed to commemorate those who served during war time but service at any time will be honored at the memorial in the beauty strip near Hoy’s Hardware along Hwy. 20.

“We’ve had overwhelming support for this project,” Mrs. Lowen said. “There have been many donations including two big loads of bulk mulch and much of the bricks. Western Interlock donated one-third of the bricks and then sold the rest to us at a ridiculously low price.”

Maple trees will complement the site along with benches and trash receptacles. Jimmy Tack is building a permanent sign for the memorial.

“We’re also going to designate one pad of bricks near the Gleaners for anniversaries, graduations and other special events,” Mrs. Lowen said.

The brick section farthest west in the memorial will be for veterans who served outside of a specific war times.

“There are so many people who are helping with this,” Mrs. Lowen said. “John Mahler (at Hoy’s Hardware) has been very supportive. They bring us out cold drinks when we’re working here.”

The initial ground work was completed by Benny Dahlenburg’s construction technology class at SHHS.

“People walking by have said many nice things about this,” Mrs. Lowen added.

Bricks are $19.95 or $24.95 to include an insignia of one’s branch of service. Call 367-2356 to reserve bricks.

A dedication is being planned for the last Wednesday in August.
