Forestry Club attends fire school

Ten Sweet Home High School Forestry Club students participated in a fire school April 3-5 at Camp Cascade, near Lyons. Participating were Kyle Dauley, Vance Wolfe, Brinden Sanders, Dillon Tidwell, Zack Cutsforth, David Rinehart, Eric Munts, Cheryl Wilson, Jessica Benson, and Kori-Lin Bishop, along with instructor Dustin Nichol.

Students learned such skills as how to use water and foams to put out fires, tool identification and usages, how to dig a fire line, how to read maps, working in teams and fire safety practices.

“This was a great experience and excellent opportunity for all that attended,” said Nichol of the event, which included 10 schools. Students were tested in three areas: Skills, Educational, and Performance. Sweet Home took third in Skills and Educational and fifth in Performance.

Overall, Sweet Home took third for the weekend.

“My four main goals were to have the kids be safe, conduct themselves in a respectful manner, use this opportunity to their advantage and have fun,” Nichol said.

“I was impressed with the kids’ ability to stay focused through this new experience while at the same time deal with the rain, snow, and hail.”
