The Sweet Home High School Forestry Club finished first Saturday at home to open the forestry competition season.
Also competing Saturday were Clatskenie, Knappa, Scio, Philomath and Tillamook. The Huskies led the field with 342 points, while Clatskenie finished second with 320 points. It is Sweet Home’s fifth win of five meets.
Junior Zech Brown was overall Jack for the event, with 82 points, while senior Callie Brown led scoring with 66 points for the Sweet Home girls.
Among highlights, Coach Niki Stafford said, senior Luke Shiffert finished close behind Brown in scoring.
Brown placed first in several events, including ax throw and job interview. He also finished first in hose lay on a team with Baker, Shiffert, senior Tucker Downs and junior Christina Belcher and was first in the Jack-Jack crosscut and first aid with Shiffert.
Baker was first in the Jill-Jill crosscut with senior Alexis Hanna and Jack-Jill cable splice with Shiffert.
Around the team, sophomore Sam Mitchell placed first in the power buck, and freshman Rebekah Belcher finished first in choker setting, with Christina Belcher finishing second. Tucker Downs and Hanna were first in the Jack and Jill crosscut.
The club will compete at Philomath Saturday and Clatskenie on April 7. Fire school is scheduled for April 11-13 at Camp Tadmor.
The state competition is set for April 27-28 in Oregon City.
Team members are Baker, Shiffert, Brown, Hanna, Christian Black, Mitchell, C.J. Mitchell, Andrew Fox, Lace-anne Shiffert, Lacey Wilson, Nakeetah Wilson, Rebekah Belcher, Denae Pennington, Colin Owens, Christina Belcher, Dakota Pennington, Justin Myronenko and Shelby Rousey.
