Forestry Club wins its own competition

The Sweet Home Forestry Club was the winner at its own competition Saturday, March 5, finishing ahead of Knappa, Clatskanie, Scio, Philomath and Sabin.

Kara Baker and Nic Dishaw were named overall Jill and Jack for accumulating the most points.

Baker earned first places in choker setting, Jill-Jill crosscut (with Callie Baker), Jack-Jill crosscut (With Keegan Downs) and written expression. She earned seconds in first aid, cable splicing (with Callie Baker), axe throw and power bucking, third in novice log roll, and fifth in hose lay and job interview.

Nic Dishaw was first in novice pole climb, choker setting, arbor climb, and job interview, second in power bucking, and fourth in open log roll.

Keegan Downs was first in Jack-Jill crosscut (with Callie Baker) and in power bucking, and fourth in cable splicing (with Kara Baker) and job interview.

Douglas Livengood was first in axe throw and second in hose lay, along with Christian Black, Luke Shiffert, Zech Brown, Kyle Craven and Austin Harvey.

Harvey placed second in novice log roll.

Tadyn Bentley was first in open pole climb and third in Jack-Jack cable splicing (with Nic Dishaw).

Callie Baker was first in Jill-Jill crosscut (with Kara Baker) second in cable splicing (with Kara Baker), arbor climb and log scaling, and fifth in hose lay.

Shelby Rousey teamed with Janel Aiello to take second in Jill-Jill crosscut and was third in power bucking.

Aiello was also fourth in power bucking.

Advisor Dustin Nichol said the club was grateful to a number of local firms that have contributed to its efforts: Weyerhaeuser for wood blocks; McCollum Logging for cable; Rice Logging for use of a dump truck; THI for cable and rock; and Mike Davenport at WPOK for hog fuel.
