Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, Foster Dam Road will be closed for seven months while three damaged spillway gates at Foster Dam are repaired, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced.
The road will remain closed until repairs are completed in early April 2010. Officials suggest using Quartzville Road as alternative access to the North River Road area.
Corps dam safety inspections in July 2008 found all four of Foster Dam’s spillway gates had some level of damage, with three of them having visible twisting or bending of the steel frame and supports.
The Corps completed repairs to one gate in January 2009 to ensure the dam is capable of accomplishing its usual flood damage reduction mission.
