Editor:
Today, I attended the Veterans Day program at Foster Elementary School. I was invited by my 2nd-grade daughter, Shelby Manuel.
I want you to know that the students’ performances and actions touched me deeper than I’ve ever been touched before as it applies to being thanked for my service. I’ve been to memorial dedications, been awarded citations and have attended Veterans Day parades all my life, participating in many.
But never, never have I felt this welcome at home, ever before. Maybe only another vet can understand that. I’m not sure. Either way, I want to thank each and every student and staff member for showing me that my service was not in vain. I would be hard-pressed to remember when I’ve been to a more truly patriotic event. I’ve never felt so honored.
You children have made me even prouder of my country than I was before I came to your school today and saw for myself that with young people like you to guide and influence our great nation, the future will be assured.
I admire each and every one of you, and the opportunities that lie in your future. Never quit. Believe in yourself, and always do the right thing.
Again, thank you so very much, from the bottom of my heart. And thank you for showing me that you understand that the sacrifices our veterans made, including giving them their lives for their country, is why you had the freedom to have this wonderful celebration today.
Don Manuel Jr.
