The median in downtown Sweet Home will soon get a facelift if the community can raise $3,000 by mid-May.
The City of Sweet Home commissioned a landscape architect to develop a planting plan for the median. The plan includes flowering perennials, ground cover, trees and decorative lamp posts.
The Sweet Home Community Foundation has committed matching funds up to $3,000 to complete the $6,000 planting project. This means that every donation made by businesses and individuals will be doubled.
The Sweet Home Community Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the Sweet Home community. This project, which reflects pride in the community and encourages economic growth, meets the Foundation’s charitable goals.
The Master Gardeners have been instrumental in putting together a committee to plant the median. The group includes representatives from the Master Gardeners, Tree Commission, City Hall, the Public Works Department, Oregon Department of Transportation and interested individuals.
“Our goal is to get the median planted by the end of May,” Master Gardeners Bud Liberatore said.
The Master Gardeners, with the help of Dan Darwood, Sweet Home Sanitation, the Sweet Home High School leadership class and Public Works filled the planters with fresh soil in March.
The Master Gardeners solicited donations at the Sweet Home Tree Fair and raised $310. In addition, the “Empty Nesters” of the Sweet Home Community Chapel donated $65.
Donations to the project may be sent to the Sweet Home Community Foundation, P.O. Box 447, Sweet Home, OR 97386, with “median beautification in the lower left corner. Donations must be receieved by mid-May to qualify for matching funds through the Sweet Home Community Foundation.
Persons also are encouraged to volunteer to help plant the median or build the lamp posts and may call Liberatore at 367-7768 or Bill Carroll at 367-1534 for more information.
