Mike Aerni, 119, Chad Emmert, 130, K.C. Stokes, 135 and David Helfrich, 171, won all of their matches Friday as the Husky grapplers took second to Canby during the Lane County tournament.
Coach Steve Thorpe was pleased with his squad’s season opening effort.
“We’re certainly not where we’re going to be in February, but we looked good in many spots,” Coach Thorpe said.
Several Huskies lost only one match and showed strong efforts, Coach Thorpe said.
“Neal Workman looked very tough,” Coach Thorpe said. “He beat the third ranked guy in the state from Cottage Grove. Chad Workman wrestled very well, too.”
Newcomer Jon Dearborn, who brings wrestling experience from Alaska, proved he’s a tough competitor, Coach Thorpe said.
“It was obvious that Mike Aerni has put in a lot of time in the spring and summer,” Coach Thorpe said. “He looked very solid. Chad Emmert has moved up from 112 pounds to 130 pounds. He’s a solid wrestler.”
K.C. Stokes and David Helfrich was super sharp, Coach Thorpe said.
“Stokes seems to get up for the big matches, even more than usual,” Coach Thorpe said. “He looked tough beating Lucas Hamilton, a Greco All-American from Canby. David Helfrich was very solid. He’s definitely benefiting from tough work out partners and from having Chad Zurcher as a volunteer coach.”
Coach Thorpe said Helfrich has adjusted his style to be very aggressive.
“He’s wrestling people on their feet and not riding them,” Coach Thorpe said.
This week: The Huskies host their home tournament Friday at 4 p.m. Temas include Redmond, Silverton and McKay.
Coach Thorpe took a novice squad to Newberg Saturday. Local grapplers who won all of their matches were Weston Harrel, Hance Woody, Jessie Aitken and Brad Seiber.
