The New Era received two computerized type-setting machines from Compugraphic Corp. this week to replace the paper’s obsolete equipment. The Compugraphic 7200 sets headlines and advertising type from 14-72 point in regular and italic font. It replaces two old Headliner machines and is 10 times faster. The CompuWriter Jr. replaces the Justowriter for news stories and is two to four times faster. It has two type faces (Futura and Bodoni) in regular, bold and italic.

Gas stations have been running low and in some cases running out of fuel allocations. Bill Bradley, owner of Bradley’s Phillips 66 said it’s a bad situation that he doesn’t see getting better before January. Gas station owners reported being allotted 70% of their 1972 sales in fuel, and expected deliveries are running late.

Navy seaman Ronald W. Wodtli, 1971 graduate of Sweet Home, was commended as a crewmember of the USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship, for his efforts as part of the US Sixth Fleet task force on the Mediterranean during the latest Middle East crisis. The powerful force stood ready to evacuate American citizens from danger areas while diplomats helped negotiate a cease fire.

Dec. 23, 1998

Assembly of God Church Pastor Dan Helland and his wife recently returned to the US with a Chinese girl they adopted. Lauren Helland is nine months old. It took the Hellands 2.5 years to even get to the point of leaving. They visited Pastor Helland’s niece, Li Jiang, before returning to the states.

Joe Ponzoha, 76, hung up his Santa suit after playing the jolly old man for 68 years. Health issues forced the retired Willamette Industries employee to bring an end to the tradition that has been enjoyed by generations of youngsters from Sweet Home to Portland. His first act as Santa was in 1930 when he was only 8 years old after he was invited to play the part for a PTA meeting.

Some Santa letter requests from second graders this year included: sega saturn, slinky, new bike, wedding ring (for mom), nintendo 64, learning how to do Cursive book, a Batman, sky driver, stuffed animal, toy train, cow toy, Bugs Life CD Rom, remote control car, nitrodozer, baseball bat, twister, nitindo, LaGos, big tigger big pooh, my very own tv and a sister play with, roller Blades, jumprope, chemistry set, a puppy, some CDs like Titanic, kurt Russulle, great white shark, porsche, pony or a goat.
