Marine Private Gary L. Gill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Gill of Route 1, Sweet Home, graduated from eight weeks of recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif.
He will now undergo about three weeks of individual combat training and then, after leave at home, will report to his first Marine Corps assignment.
The intensified Marine recruit emphasizes rigid physical conditioning and survival techniques, both at sea and ashore, to develop self-confidence and endurance.
Gordon W. Larson, 44-year–old mechanical engineer from Lewiston, Idaho, has been named resident engineer at the Green Peter-Foster dams project by Colonel William J. Talbott, Portland U.S. Army District Engineer.
Larson, whose address is Box 545, Sweet Home, and who has been at the Green Peter-Foster project since 1946 as a supervisory general engineer, will succeed Robert Moore.
Sweet Home’s City Council set a new precedent Tuesday night when it took the initiative and started the wheels rolling toward formation of a sewer improvement district in the 12th Avenue area.
Another item of major interest was the reading of an ordinance to amend the present curfew law for persons under 18 years of age.

Sweet Home has not escaped a nationwide outbreak of head lice, according to School Nurse Diane Nelson.
Nelson said a louse outbreak is prevalent throughout the School District. She emphasized that with precautions and effort, the problem can be overcome.
Six successful burglaries and five attempts have prompted local business owners to consider development of a Business Watch program in Sweet Home.
An informational meeting was held Thursday morning. Approximately 40 persons attended. The program was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
Vocal music was in the air Thursday night in Sweet Home High School Auditorium as junior high and high school students gave happy listeners an early Christmas treat.
Opening the evening’s musical treat were the ever-popular Sweet Home High School Ensemble singing “Christmas Fanfare.”
