Seven newly built school bus stop shelters are now in use, and more are expected. The shelters are financed by a benefit dance and built by the Active Club members. The first to be erected was near the Wanigan Cafe in the Midway district.
A Dallas man looking for a night’s lodging wound up in the city jail in a roundabout way. Melvin Ferguson, 24, was arrested for drunkenness Monday night. Seven minutes later, it was discovered that someone had entered City Hall through a window, and the heel print left behind matched that of Ferguson. Further evidence was glass found in his trousers. Asked if he knew his whereabouts when he entered City Hall, he said, “I thought it was the jail.”
Sweet Home’s first baby of the year is Shyla Kalleen DeVaney, born to Judy and Kenneth DeVaney. She was born at 1:17 p.m. on Jan. 3, weighing 9 lbs., 7 oz. at 22 inches long.
The beginning of a new “Sunday Recreation” program is now offered in the community as a pilot program to determine the community’s need for informal recreation opportunities on Sunday. The high school gym will offer space for children’s games and activities, and space for older juveniles and adults to play volleyball and basketball.
Sweet Home’s first baby of the year is Boe James Baxter, born to Shauna and Shim Baxter. He was born at 1:41 a.m. on Jan. 5, weighing 7 lbs., 11 oz. at 20.5 inches long.
SHEM moved out of the Chamber of Commerce and into its new location in the former site of Backcountry Pedaler at 4101 Hwy. 20, across from Cedar Shack. The new location provides more storage and space during a time when there are record-setting food drives. This year, SHEM gave 240 Christmas boxes and averaged 180 monthly boxes.
