Gail James Caswell, 91, of Sweet Home, died July 6, 2006.
He was born in Albany, in the Knox Butte area, to James J. and Augustine (Neil) Caswell.
He was married to Agnes Pearl Alford on June 22, 1935. In the late 1940s he started BCM Logging Company and bought out his partners a few years later.
He retired in 1958 due to failing eyesight. He began raising Appaloosa horses, showing his horses in many Appaloosa shows. In 1964 he helped start the Santiam Cascade Endurance Ride. He rode the ride for 10 years, winning many rides. He began riding the Endurance Rides again in 1988 with his daughter Joyce as his eyesight deteriorated. He quit riding in 1998.
He loved his horses, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Caswell is survived by his son, Delbert Caswell and wife Pauline of Sweet Home; son, Lyle Caswell of Brownsville; daughter, Joyce Brown and husband Ted of Sweet Home; seven grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Alford Caswell and his brother Gene Caswell.
Graveside services were held July 11 at Lewis Cemetery.
