Bringing in gambling to Sweet Home – no matter what kind – seems to me to be going in the wrong direction. Yes, we have casinos in Oregon but do we have to make Sweet Home a gambling place? I dislike gambling in any kind of way. Never did like Las Vegas, Reno or any of that kind of lifestyle.
Now that Sweet Home is growing and getting many new things in our community, this is not the time (and never will be, in my opinion) to contaminate Sweet Home with gambling and all the bad other things that seem to follow. Next we could be looking at more crime for our police to handle, and the kind of people that come here for gambling surely are not what we want to have in this community.
As a child I saw gambling in Sweet Home. Men gambled placing their guns on the table and many deadly fights broke out then. Many times men dropped their paychecks at the gambling tables and their children went to bed hungry and discouraged. Gambling is very addictive. It ruins lives.
If you agree with me call someone on the City Council and give your opinion. Please, let’s stop this before it corrupts our town. It is my understanding many of the council are planning to vote for the gambling, so give them your thoughts to stop them from making an error. The vote is coming up soon.
And thank you, Councilor Rich Rowley, for the fine letter opposing this last week. Good job, Rich. We do have a good council, but on this issue it is my right to disagree. Mayor Craig Fentiman may be reached at home 367-6826 or his office 367-5121; Jim Bean 367-8467; Bob McIntire 367-1770. I am sure they will listen to your concerns too.
